TVTN Now Active in 1 Million Cable Households
Network Champions the Cause for Local Media by Improving Municipal Cable Channels
Mount Laurel, New Jersey, July 28, 2006 TelVue Corporation announced today that its TelVue Virtual Television Network (TVTN) is now available in one million households. TVTN is a network of municipally-owned public, educational and government (PEG) cable channels that helps towns provide their viewers with up-to-date hometown news, weather, traffic, and emergency information in a format that looks like other cable networks. Like PBS these channels are non-commercial in nature but rely on the generosity of corporate and local business for sponsorship.
TVTN is available in 1 Million households and has 57 affiliates with viewers in 89 cities and towns in eight states:
New Jersey
,
Pennsylvania
,
Delaware
,
Virginia
,
North Carolina
,
Florida
,
Massachusetts
and
California
. After an initial instillation in 2003, with its first affiliate in
Ocean City
,
NJ
, TVTN tested the concept for a couple of years before officially rolling out into the market in 2005. It has gained tremendous momentum since then, and is on pace to be in over 2 million households with 76 affiliates who have viewers in 155 cities and towns by year’s end. Pilot programs in
Maryland
and
New York
will be launched in the near future.
“The overwhelming interest we’re seeing from cities and towns is being driven by the fact that hometown media is disappearing from the communication landscape,” said H.F. “Gerry” Lenfest, chairman of TelVue and cable visionary. “By involving the business community in the solution, we are helping to provide higher quality hometown television stations without passing the cost onto taxpayers or cable subscribers.”
These stations are provided to municipalities as part of their franchise agreement with cable companies. Although there are literally thousands across the
U.S.
, they are often underutilized as electronic bulletin boards due to insufficient resources and programming expertise. TVTN helps towns improve the information quality of their channels by making it easier to gather information from local sources. TVTN also improves the viewing experience for cable subscribers by enhancing production values and helping in managing and editing content.
TVTN also equips local emergency service resources with the ability to interrupt programming and provide specific, actionable information in real time. Surveys have shown that full production PEG channels, like those TVTN produces, can drive viewership that is on par with other popular cable networks.
“We hear from our affiliates everyday about how their renewed hometown channel is energizing their residents and building morale,” said Joseph M. Murphy, president and CEO of TelVue Corporation. “We’re proud to be able to add value in our nation’s towns and cities while building shareholder value.”
