TelVue Corp. Launches Enhanced Emergency Communications Capability.
Comprehensive four-in-one technology provides simultaneous phone, email, website, and
TV emergency notification
May 10, 2007 (Mount Laurel, NJ) - TelVue Corporation today introduced technology that enables local emergency management officials to send emergency messages by email to residents’ cell phones and computers. These e-mails provide individuals with the same official information that TelVue already helps cities, towns and school districts air on their municipally-operated cable TV channels and websites. TelVue’s enhanced four-in-one emergency capability can save lives and reduce confusion in an emergency. It is available exclusively to residents in towns affiliated with TVTN, a network of Public, Educational and Government (PEG) cable TV channels that work with TelVue to enhance programming.
By equipping local officials with their own emergency notification capability, TelVue fills a critical role in emergency response and complements the Emergency Alert System (EAS) at a county, school district, and hometown level. Whereas EAS stations are required to broadcast national emergencies, emergency broadcast is still voluntary at a local level, despite the fact that most emergencies are local in nature.
Proactive communication like email, especially to cell phones, means that more residents will get emergency information faster than they would through more passive media vehicles. Residents no longer need to be near their television or radio or even be cable subscribers to receive critical information in a time of emergency. TelVue’s new emergency email feature is the most recent addition to the production support that TelVue provides to PEG channels.
While some PEG channels already provide excellent programming, TelVue helps underutilized channels reach their full potential with equipment and production support, as well as by attracting the support of PBS-like corporate sponsors. By airing content that looks like other cable channels, TVTN helps create a pattern of viewership and establishes PEG channels as a critical source for information especially in times of emergency. To date, TelVue has partnered with more than 175 PEG cable channels in townships and school districts across 10 states to help provide better hometown news, traffic, weather, and emergency information.
“TelVue’s capability empowers local authorities to effectively communicate emergency information to residents when and where they need it,” said
Joseph Murphy
, president and CEO of TelVue Corporation. “With the addition of email notification, we are providing TVTN affiliate towns with a four-in-one emergency communications capability effective at a truly local level.”
The emergency email technology is powered by WEBUS©, a patent-pending technology that allows authorized users to add, edit, and manage PEG channel information from wherever Internet access is available. Emergency managers can prepare a single emergency notification message and transmit it to residents via TV, website, email and phone all at once.
“Most people today are being underserved by mainstream media at the hometown level,” said H.F. “Gerry” Lenfest, chairman of TelVue and cable visionary. “At a time when emergency preparedness is top of mind for many Americans, TVTN helps fill the gap left by regional media consolidation and empowers local emergency managers to better respond to situations at the local level.”
TelVue’s Emergency Communications capability will be rolled out on July 1, 2007 and will be tested in multiple beta sites. Demonstrations will take place on May 10th at the New Jersey Emergency Preparedness Conference, held at the Tropicana Casino Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
